Gothenburg's street grid runs perpendicular to the Göta River, which cuts through the city center before widening into the Göta Älv estuary opening to the North Sea. The historic moat-ring of canals that once defended the city now curves through downtown, bordered by Vallgraven on the inner ring and threading past Haga's dense neighborhood.
