Brussels radiates from the Grand Place at its center, with the old medieval street pattern still legible in the tight grid of the Ilots Sacrés district. The Senne River runs underground through much of the city, its path visible in the sunken canal that cuts through the lower town toward the Meuse. Wide Haussmann-style boulevards—Rue de Namur, Boulevard de Waterloo—slice through the medieval core, connecting the elevated upper town around the Royal Palace to the commercial center below.
