Black Map Art Palettes

Black is the most graphic of these colors, and the most architectural. It strips a map down to pure structure — no color to soften it, just the street grid as line and contrast — which is exactly why it reads as design rather than decoration. On a wall it wants a little breathing room and good light; give it those and it does the work of a gallery print, sharp and deliberate. It pairs cleanly with white, and with the warm woods that keep it from feeling cold, and it's the natural anchor for a monochrome or modern room. Black flatters cities with dramatic geometry above all — a radial plan, a tangle of old streets, a grid that runs at a defiant angle — because when the only thing on the page is the shape of the place, the shape had better be interesting. If you love the bones of a city more than its colors, black is the honest way to show them.
