The Salzach River divides Salzburg into two distinct halves—the Altstadt on the left bank, compressed against the Kapuzinerberg ridge, and the Neustadt spreading across the right bank's flatter terrain. The old town's medieval street pattern radiates from Domplatz and Residenzplatz, while the Hohensalzburg Fortress crowns the ridge above, visible from nearly every approach. The Salzburg Ring Road traces the perimeter of both banks, with rail lines running parallel to the river's course northward toward the Austrian lowlands.
