Lincoln's street grid runs true north-south and east-west, centered on the State Capitol grounds at 15th and K Streets. The Salt Creek winds through the city in a series of meanders, carving out the western edge and separating downtown from the newer developments across its banks. The grid is interrupted only by a handful of diagonal avenues—most notably O Street running northwest—and by the Burlington Northern rail corridor that cuts through the central city.
