Joliet sits where the Des Plaines River bends sharply westward before joining the Illinois River, its downtown grid aligned to that curve. The Illinois and Michigan Canal runs parallel to the Des Plaines through the city center, a thin line of industrial heritage cutting across the street pattern. I-80 slices through the north side, and the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway threads southeast, both corridors defining how the city expanded outward from its riverfront core.
