Valletta Map Art
Valletta sits on a narrow peninsula jutting into the Grand Harbour, its streets laid out in a rigid grid by the Knights of Malta in the 1560s. Republic Street runs the full length of the peninsula from the City Gate to Fort Saint Elmo, crossed by parallel streets that descend steeply to the water on both sides. The harbor itself wraps around three sides—the Grand Harbour to the south and east, Marsamxett Harbour to the north—creating a compact, fortified city that reads from above as a geometric knife blade surrounded by water.
