Taipei sits in a north-south compressed valley where the Keelung and Xindian rivers converge, their channels cutting through the urban grid before emptying into the Tamsui River estuary to the northwest. The city radiates from the Taipei Basin floor in a rectangular street pattern, hemmed in by steep ridgelines—the Yangmingshan volcanic plateau to the north and the Snow Mountain range to the south—which compress the urban footprint into a dense, linear form. Taipei 101 marks the southeastern anchor of the downtown core, while the old walled city center sits near the junction where the rivers meet, and modern MRT lines trace the valleys like threads following the easiest path through the terrain.
