Luxor straddles the Nile River in a sharp north-south division, with the Valley of the Kings and Temple of Hatshepsut rising on the west bank's desert plateau, while the modern city clusters on the eastern floodplain. The river's bend creates a natural boundary between these two distinct zones—ancient monuments scattered across barren ridges on one side, dense streets and the Luxor Temple anchoring the city center on the other. Modern roads follow the Nile's course through town, then split inland toward the surrounding agricultural belt before the desert takes over completely.
