Hampton's grid sits on the Peninsula between the James River and Back River, with the Hampton Roads waterfront defining its eastern edge. The city's streets run in orderly blocks inland from the water, interrupted by the curve of the Elizabeth River to the north and the nail of Fort Monroe anchoring the southeastern corner. The bridge-tunnel infrastructure—Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel and the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel—are visible as linear corridors cutting across the water to Norfolk and Newport News.
